The Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections (CTASC) escape the reading room and reach out to the wider public through the work of its researchers and partnerships. Over the summer, archival holdings play a starring role in a book on the Mariposa Folk Festival, in addition to an installation featuring Joyce Wieland and an exhibition titled Destination Canada.
The Mariposa Folk Festival : A History
Mariposa Folk Festival: A History hit the shelves in May 2017. It tells the story of the festival’s growth from a small-town festival to one of international acclaim. Over the years, the festival hosted many up-and-coming stars in Canadian folk and popular music in the early stages of their careers including Leonard Cohen, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, and Gordon Lightfoot. Author Michael Hill, Artistic Director of the Mariposa Folk Festival, consulted the Mariposa Folk Foundation Inc. fonds during the research phase of his book. More information about the book can be found on the publisher’s website. An online exhibit on Mariposa’s history is also available on CTASC’s website.
Passion Over Reason : Tom Thomson & Joyce Wieland
A dynamic installation of Ontario’s two groundbreaking artists will focus on themes of nationality, gender, and sexuality at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Photographs, sketches, posters, and film scripts from the Joyce Wieland fonds and Joyce Wieland collection will be on display until 19 November 2017 alongside the works of Tom Thomson. More information about the exhibit is available on the McMichael’s website.
Destination Canada : Migration Arrival and Finding a Place of Belonging
The exhibition celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary by exploring a diversity of migration experiences from early settlement to present day. Photographs from the Toronto Telegram fonds and a letter from the Archambeau-Thomas family fonds are on display in the Toronto Reference Library’s TD Gallery until 30 July 2017. More information about the exhibit is available on the Toronto Public Library’s website.
