A recent purchase for York University's Special Collections is an example of a livre de peinture published by the American Limited Editions Club in 1935. This edition of James Joyce's Ulysses is accompanied by twenty six reproduced illustrations by the French artists Henri Matisse. George Macy, who designed the publication, commissioned Matisse to provide the illustrations for $5000. The artist selected six subjects from Homer's Odyssey.
This item is a fine complement to the the Special Collections' copy of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland that is illustrated by artist Salvador Dali, a favourite with students visiting the Archives & Special Collections.
